What is Biotin

BIOTIN & HAIR??

You might have come across this word-Biotin quite a few times now, but did you know what exactly it is and what it does?
Let’s figure it out…

What is Biotin??

Biotin is a member of the vitamin B family also renowned as vitamin B7 or H vitamin. It is water soluble in nature. Our body itself does not synthesize it but the bacteria in our body produces it. Biotin is also present in numerous foods like eggs, meat, nuts and fish. Biotin acts as coenzyme to covert to simpler fats, amino acids and glucose.

CLINICAL FINDINGS

Biotin is one of the most trusted and listed components of hair supplements. A study in 2015 showed that women with thinning hair when provided with an oral marine protein supplement (MPS) containing biotin, twice per day for 90 days examined hair growth in the areas affected by hair loss followed by less hair fall.

BIOTIN FOR HAIR AND NAILS:

Keratin is a protein which is a vital component of our hair, skin and nails. Biotin helps to promote healthy hair growth by improving keratin infrastructure thereby limiting chances of brittle breakage and damage thus resulting in thicker luscious hair. Buh buh buh……ladiesssssssss along side this one needs to maintain a healthy diet. BIOTIN acts as an oxygen carrier to cells and hair follicles. The body also uses biotin to produce amino acids, which are then converted into keratin. According to research, a daily oral supplementation with 2.5 mg biotin was shown to increase nail thickness and improve nail texture in brittle nails. Hair loss refers to a halt in the growth cycle of hair. Hair thinning has been a prime issue owing to a stressful lifestyle and poor nutrition so in order to curb this problem one can resort to the intake of biotin supplements. “We find biotin to be very important for treating hair disorders. It also makes nails thicker,” says Wilma Bergfield,MD”.

BIOTIN DEFICIENCY:

Deficiency in your biotin levels isn’t as common as other deficiencies. Very less people eating a healthy, well-balanced diet will struggle to have enough biotin. That’s because many common foods contain large amounts of the vitamin naturally.
Major deficiency symptoms include:

  • Hair loss or alopecia
  • Red rash on skin or scalp
  • Seborrheic dermatitis

WHY CHOOSE SUPPLEMENTS OVER DIETARY BIOTIN?
How much biotin am I supposed to take?

  • The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for biotin ranges to 30-40 mcg above which leads to mild toxicity where the symptoms aren’t that elaborate.
  • Since Biotin is a water soluble vitamin the efficacy of the vitamin being absorbed by the body is less as most of the biotin being a water soluble vitamin gets bound to the urine and excreted hence supplements help in easy absorption.
  • Cooking or processed foods render biotin unavailability as the biotin is lost due to heavy processing techniques and heat leading to less active biotin.
  • Biotin needs to be consumed on a daily basis in order to show effective results.
